Originated as embroidered quilts about a thousand years ago, Kantha has been used to keep babies warm. This has with time developed into a full-fledged art, making way for the embroidery creating lines, fields of colour and motifs on diverse textiles. Biswa Bangla has worked together with thousands of craftswomen in Birbhum district. Design improvement and product diversification has reintroduced Kantha stitch on silk and cotton textiles, and home furnishing products. Increased income has helped these women imbibe confidence, invest in education, nutrition, health and better sanitation.
