A handwoven Banarasi cotton saree in mustard, drawn over with Kadhua meenakari — buttis in coloured silk worked alongside the zari. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari, with the meena lighting the buttis from inside the weave against the warm mustard field. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom. Meenadar on a cotton ground is a particular discipline — the weaver works coloured silk and zari into a lighter fibre, where every irregularity shows. The loom hours are the same as on silk, and the cloth holds them as visible care. That is what makes a Banarasi cotton sit at a different register from any other handloom. Styling Note Drape Nivi or Bengali — cotton settles into both easily. Pair with antique-gold or temple jewellery; mustard takes warm metals beautifully. A deep mustard, rust or ivory handloom blouse holds the tone.
