Rangkat is the Banarasi weaver's art of two colours in one fabric. The lilac warp and ivory tissue weft cross at every thread, creating a ground that shifts between the two depending on the light and the angle of the drape. Neither colour dominates entirely. The fabric is always both at once. Across this shifting ground, scattered kadwa-woven meenakari parrot butis sit in pink, teal, orange, purple, and red silk. Each bird is distinct, placed at intervals across the body with enough space between them that the rangkat ground remains the primary statement. The border is wide gold zari with a dense phulwar bel and bird motifs woven throughout, the avian vocabulary of the body continuing into the border without interruption.
