

A multicolor Banarasi saree in pure Katan silk, woven in Rangkaat — distinct colour zones built into the body of the drape by cutting and rejoining the warp. A continuous Jangla of scrolling vines and florals plays across the colour fields. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom. Rangkaat is the most ambitious of the Banarasi techniques — the warp is cut and rejoined in the colours of the next zone, so each colour change in the body is a discrete moment of loom work. That is why a Rangkaat piece reads almost like a tapestry: every colour boundary is a hand decision.
